Student Transport

School Transport Information from September 2020

Following the publication of guidance on 2 July regarding the reopening of schools, the Department for Education published specific school transport guidance on 11 August. We are now able to provide further information about arrangements from September.

Derbyshire County Council has published its own parent and student guidance and but a few key points are detailed below.

  • social distancing guidelines that apply on public transport will not apply on dedicated school transport from September 2020
  • wherever possible, students should sit with others from within their school year group bubble when travelling to and from school and avoid mixing with others not in their year group
  • all secondary school age students should wear a face covering on school or public transport unless they have a medical exemption

In respect of services that are normally open to the general public, the Council has either closed the journey so only school students can travel, provided a duplicate service or, where passenger numbers are very low, taken no action as it will still be possible to comply with the 1m plus social distancing rule. A copy of bus timetables for Belper School and Sixth Form Centre from September 2020 are attached and any changes have been highlighted.

In respect of students who are not entitled to a free bus pass, and who normally pay to travel, a standard £1.00 single fare will be levied on dedicated school transport (this only applies to bus services that are contracted by Derbyshire County Council School Transport Office). Students will have to pay the exact fare as change will not be offered. This is to remove the need for drivers to have to handle cash and a passenger notice has been sent to operators so it can be displayed in the vehicle.

Information is also available on the Council’s website from the following link https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/social-health/health-and-wellbeing/health-protection/disease-control/coronavirus/schools/school-transport/school-transport-and-coronavirus.aspx
